4 Weeks Pregnant | Pregnancy Week by Week 1

WEEK 04

Week 04 starts from 29th to 35th day since the first day of the last period. 

By the fourth week, the baby is an embryo that connects to the mother through the placenta and the forming umbilical cord. The pregnancy test results with the test strips are relatively accurate now. Moms can make sure the existence and growth of the baby, so remember to eat healthily.

How does the baby grow?

This week marks the beginning of the embryonic period. From now until 10 weeks, all baby’s organs will begin to develop; some even begin to perform their functions. Therefore, babies are very vulnerable to any interference in their development during this period.

At this time, the baby is an embryo about the size of a poppy seed, consisting of two layers: the epidermis and the endoderm. 

The early placenta also has a two-layer structure and is burrowing into the wall of the uterus, creating space for blood to flow to develop a complete placenta – providing oxygen and nutrition to the baby.

The amniotic sac also appears to protect the baby during pregnancy.  The amniotic fluid envelops the baby to develop.

Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 4th week of pregnancy

  • Maternal tissue is to create a cocoon that protects the fetus.
  • Once moms are determined to become pregnant, the body will need more iron. Moms will need about 30mg iron per day for fetal development.
  • Pregnant women may experience some minor contractions at this time and increased vaginal discharge. 
  • The body begins to absorb more calcium from food and is willing to absorb calcium from maternal reserves if it’s needed to support the baby’s development.
  • Moms may feel unusually tired these days as the body is busy making molds for the little baby.
  • At this point, moms may feel pain in the breast, fatigue or nausea. However, some women do not notice any difference in their bodies in the early stages of pregnancy.

Activities mom should do this week

  • If currently taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter, moms need to consult the doctor to see if they’re safe for the baby.
  • Supplement prenatal vitamins that contain at least 400mcg of folic acid every day; by the time a woman gets pregnant, the folic acid needs to double – about 600mcg / day.
  • Make sure what moms eat is good for both moms and children
