38 Weeks Pregnant | Pregnancy Week by Week 1

How does the baby grow?

The baby is actually plumper. The baby now weighs about 3kg and about 50cm long. The baby has very tight fists, moms will soon test when holding his or her hand for the first time. The baby’s organs are mature and ready for life outside the womb.

Moms are wondering what color the baby’s eyes are. If the baby is born with brown eyes, they will remain brown. If the baby is born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may remain gray or blue, or turn green, chestnut, or brown when they are 9 months old. This is because a child’s iris may become hyperpigmented in the months after birth, but usually, the color of the eye will not fade or be blue.

Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 38th week of pregnancy

For many women, the next few weeks are weeks of waiting. Take this time to prepare the baby’s room or essential tasks moms may not be able to do at least some time after the baby is born.

Some swelling in the feet and ankles is normal these weeks but call the doctor right away if moms experience excessive or sudden swelling in the feet or ankles, slight swelling in the hands, facial swelling or puffiness around the eyes, or sudden weight gain. Besides, moms also need to tell the doctor right away if moms have a severe or persistent headache; vision changes, mild or severe upper abdominal pain, or nausea and vomiting. These are symptoms of a serious condition called preeclampsia.
