WEEK 36

How does the baby grow?

The baby is gaining weight at about 28 grams per day. Now the baby weighs about 2.6kg and is 47cm long. The baby is losing the undercoat covering the body as well as the casing layer, wax covering and protecting the skin during nine months soaking in amniotic fluid. The baby swallows all these substances, along with other secretions, and the result is a black mixture called meconium, which is the product of the baby’s first defecation. Most likely now the baby has turned the head down.

Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 36th week of pregnancy

Now the baby has taken up a lot of space in the uterus so moms may be uncomfortable when being full. It is recommended to divide meals into smaller meals throughout the day. However, moms may have less heartburn and become easier to breathe when the baby starts to drop to the pelvis. This process – called prolapse – usually happens a few weeks before labor if this is moms’ first child. If the baby drops, moms may feel pressure in the lower abdomen, which makes it more difficult for moms to walk, and moms need to urinate more often. If the baby falls very low, moms will feel a lot of pressure in the vagina area and also feel quite uncomfortable. Some women say they feel like they are carrying a bowling ball between their legs.

Moms may also notice Braxton Hicks contractions more often. Review the signs of labor. If the pregnancy is full-term, the fetus has been uncomplicated, and the amniotic fluid has not broken yet. Moms should call the doctor at once if moms notice that the baby is less active, or that moms are leaking amniotic fluid, or are having vaginal bleeding, fever, severe or prolonged headache, ongoing abdominal pain, or vision change.
