How does the baby grow?
This week, the baby weighs almost 900 grams and is about 36cm long with the legs extended. The baby is sleeping and waking up regularly, able to open and close the eyes, and even suck the fingers. With growing brain tissue, the baby’s brain is working actively. While the lungs are still immature, they are still able to function – with lots of medical help – if the baby is born now.
From now on, the baby may hiccup. It usually lasts only a few minutes at a time, and is not harmful to the baby, so moms just need to relax and enjoy it.
Changes occurring in the mother’s body during the 27th week of pregnancy
The second trimester is about to end, but as the body speeds up for the final stage, moms may begin to notice some new symptoms. Along with the symptoms of aches and pains, moms may notice leg cramps now and then. The feet are under heavier gravity, and the expanded uterus is putting pressure on the veins that carry blood from the feet to the heart as well as nerves that lead to the leg.
Unfortunately, cramps can get worse as the pregnancy progresses. Leg cramps are more common at night but can also occur during the day. Stretch the legs and then gently bend the toes toward the shin. A few minutes of walking or calf massage will be also useful.
